What a day!

Well, I think we got our money’s worth out of Yorkshire today.

Mike and Mark, Rich’s cousins were keen to do the Yorkshire Three Peaks over the weekend, but not all on one day.  All three of them spent family time as youngsters up here and were keen to have another explore of some childhood stomping grounds.  Mike’s son, Luke is fourteen and has never been up a mountain before so it was going to be quite an adventure.

Today, we were hoping to tick off Whernside and Ingleborough and the weather certainly helped us along with that.  Apart from one short but absolutely torrential downpour, the sun shone with a light, cooling breeze, perfect for walking.  The rain was perfectly timed before the ascent of Ingleborough and then the sun just kept on shining and we dried out beautifully. We were ready prepared with Compeed blister packs which was lucky as they certainly kept two eroded walkers going with some fake skin!

We had managed to coincide our day with a Three Peaks Challenge so there were hoards of charity raising walkers en route.  That didn’t spoil the day though but once we were on the last ridge of Ingleborough heading towards Park Fell, everyone had turned off in the other direction and we had the place to ourselves - that was lovely.

The clarity during the day was incredible and we could could see easily over to The Lakes, Morecambe Bay and even Blackpool Tower.

Given the weekend’s weather was only set to get worse, we decided to head to a cottage that Rich, Mike and Mark had stayed in as youngsters.  Well earned fish and chips in Hawes came first, however, which we ate outside in the sunshine.

We took the road back via Kettlewell and many tired bodies, fell out of the cars with a creak when we arrived home for a few drinks and much needed sleep.

’Twas grand. It was.
