Swinford Toll Bridge

Opened in 1769, Swinford remains a privately owned toll bridge and was recently sold for over £1 million. The toll remains controversial, not so much for its size (5p for a car), but for the delays introduced by collecting the toll on a busy road, and its special "tax haven" status dating from the bridge's own 1767 Act of Parliament.
