Conditional/tense
Almost the first thing that met my eyes after arriving in Amsterdam were these banners hanging outside an apartment block near where I am staying.
The back story is that the building has been taken over by a group of 'failed' asylum seekers from a variety of countries including Somalia, Sudan, Palestine and the DRC (Congo). Earlier this year they were forcibly evicted from their previous squatted accommodation, known as Escape Garage, and they have taken refuge in this empty high-rise which happens to be named Flight Tower. Although they have supporters who supply them food and help, they have stories about the violence and harassment inflicted by police and racist factions in this otherwise tolerant and welcoming city. They continue to exist in desperate conditions here while their applications for permission to stay, or to travel elsewhere, are processed, rejected, argued and appealed. It's a very grim welcome for refugees already in flight from persecution and rejection in their home countries
See here for some vivid images of some of the migrants (and their stories) from earlier this year.
