Relic

Today there's two for the price of one - in the foreground, some remains from the Spanish Civil War and, in the background, Santander's iconic Cabo Mayor lighthouse.

I struck lucky on this walk because I not only came across a civil war memorial, I also found two gun emplacements from the conflict - all very useful for my project.

It was a gloriously sunny, hot day, yet we managed a lot of walking. It was fascinating exploring parts of Santander off the usual tourist trail. We also encountered works by sculptor Henry Moore in a special open-air exhibition on the sea front.

It got a little tiring towards the end of the afternoon, so we joined the crowds on the beach and cooled off in the sea before heading home for a big meal and some glasses of Rioja.
