Roly's Life

Air Day

I was up at 6.30(!!!!) to get us all out by 7.30 having been advised by friends that our normal 20-25 minute journey to RNAS Culdrose could take an hour or more.

We got to the Sainsburys next door to Culdrose by 7.50, had a poo stop and bought croissants and were STILL parked by 8.15.  We were greeted by 3 separate friends (includung the one who suggested the 7.30 departure) who were all as amazed as me at the lack of traffic!

We queued for a bit for the gates to open (at 9am) but as it was sunny it didn't matter a jot!  We wandered round like little lost sheep, admiring planes, clambering on motorbikes and helicopters and picking up freebies!

The air display was set to start at 11am but for reasons I missed, it kicked off at 11.15. We were joined by friends to watch various displays - the Breitling Wing Walkers, the Muscle Biplane and others. The initial highlight was definitely the Italian "Red Arrows" - very entertaining.

After that we wandered off to look at other things and found the Search & Rescue Hangar. Red was brave enough to be winched into a Wessex while the other 3 'landed' their parachutes on an aircraft carrier. We also oohed and aahed at the awesome Mig display (very glad I got ear defenders for Red and Lily!).

Finally we hit the arena to watch the White Helmet Motorcycle display team do their thing, though we were a little distracted by the Chinook display! They were followed by the Band of The Royal Marines but then it was time to go!

We left the car park at 5 thinking it unlikely we would make it back for Sea Scouts. We were home by 5.30 AND had a couple of planes fly over a couple of times, much to Ally's delight!

We have had such a splendid day - the children have been brilliant abd everything has fallen into place perfectly. Happy, happy day :-)

ETA I've put some snaps up from today mostly for my Mum - they are all straight out of the camera because, quite frankly, I need to go to bed!
