Why do trees go rusty?

This is view from my office window of the old oak tree that has turned into the magnificant hues of Autumn. Until the internal move in the office recently all I had to look at was a small patch of sky from a roof light window. Me thinks a bird feeder attached to the window is the next move. Thanks all of you who took time to comment on Blip 100. It was really appreciated.
