Susan in the Japanese Garden

“I come to the Japanese Garden to meditate early in the morning. I feel as though I can absorb it: the sounds of water and birdsong, leaves shuffling in the wind, light dancing on stone, the grace of koi swimming through reflections. I absorb it in my belly, my bones, my essence. Then at other times, when I may be more constricted, I recall this peacefulness, and it nourishes me. I have MS, but I’m able to get around with these sticks, this scooter. I have deep compassion for people who have greater mobility challenges than I do, whose lives may be impoverished of these sounds and shapes, this light, this fragrance of freshness. I feel I’m so lucky, so lucky to be here.”--Susan Dobrof.
