Great Western Terrace

I was picking up my nephew from his catering job this evening. He works in the tearoom in the Botanic Gardens. I was early so I went for a walk and came across this wonderful terrace off Great Western Road.

The road itself is said to be the longest in Europe and widest (I think). Both of these claims are probably urban myths. However, wow, what a road it is. As you walk through the terraces that line it you can almost feel the Victorians walking all around you.

Great Western Terrace was the home of the very rich of that age. Designed by the world-famous Alexander "Greek" Thomson (nicknamed "Greek" because of the pillars he is famous for) he worked on the terrace towards the end of his life. Famous residents included Sir William Burrell, whose legacy lives on in Glasgow's Burrell Collection museum.

The whole area around the Gardens housed the rich and famous in Victorian times. This was their haven away from the slums and poor people who occupied the city centre.

Fascinating stuff!

EXTRA PHOTOS: More of the terrace and a VW camper also parked up on it!

Weather: Cloudy, pouring rain, not warm; shirt and jumper weather; awful for summer, more like October; 14 degrees c.

PS: year four, using blip to record weather as well :)
