Pentagon memorial
The pentagon tour was fascinating, full of stats and numbers that the nerdy side of me loves. Seventeen miles of corridors and 100,000 miles of telephone cable. Security was intense as you would expect. Lots of people with big and small guns, metal detectors and rules at every checkpoint.
There were no photos inside the building but they were allowed in the memorial as it was outside the perimeter fences.
More stats - there are 184 benches in the memorial. 125 lives were lost in the pentagon itself and those named benches face the building. The remaining 59 benches all face away from the building at the exact angle flight 77 approached the pentagon.
It was all quite matter of fact but still gave me a lump in my throat at times.
Trolley tour of Arlington cemetery next. Could have done with air conditioned buses as it was sooooo hot. Still enjoyed it though and the scale of the place is phenomenal. Over 400,000 military graves and up to 30 funerals a day.
Found a shopping mall to grab some food and cool down a bit.
Amelia and I found the gym and a games room when we got back to the hotel. Did a cheeky mile on the runner just to properly finish off my aching legs.
