Mother's Pride
I was serving refreshments at the market today when my elder son H and his girlfriend S popped in to say goodbye before catching the train. He'd just heard that he's got a First in his chemistry master's degree, the culmination of 5 years' hard work.
So I'm a very proud mama - but also there's a certain irony in my title.
Mother's Pride was (is!) the archetypal brand of sliced white processed bread, notorious for its lack of resemblance to the genuine article and heavily promoted in the 60s and 70s when there wasn't much alternative available in the supermarkets, and small bakeries were shutting up shop.
As well as being a master of chemicals my son is an accomplished baker of artisan-style loaves which he turns out on an almost daily basis with the minimum of fuss. It's good to know that even if he can't get a job as a scientist he'll never be short of bread.
[A blast from the past: the wonderful Dusty Springfield advertising the workers' loaf, or try this one if the first doesn't work.]
