"Stop laughing Bud. It's no laughing matter."

"I'm not laughing, I'm just smiling. I'm a happy boy today."

"Well I'm not happy, if we sit here any longer I shall be very Unhappy. Someone, anyone, can just come along and take me home with them. Is that funny?"

"Take you home, to another home, not home with Cilla and me.
 That would mean I could have your bed permanently, not just share it.

 Let's sit here a little bit longer."

Once I explained that the sign meant the boat, not Poppy they both cheered up again.  I'm sure Bud would have missed her eventually, once he got used to having her bed all to himself.
