Male bumble bee

The life cycle of bumble bees is pretty amazing.

This must be a male spending the night under a teasel head.
The fact that there are males around means that the colony is coming to an end. Male are from unfertilised eggs; any fertilised eggs are now brought up as queens who will disperse.  A queen will mate with a male and keep the sperm overwinter and use it throughout all the following year.
