Top of a Wych Elm tree, that sadly, like so many hereabouts, is being killed off by Dutch Elm Disease. Classic symptoms, and time of year for it to become obvious.
This tree is one of three such Elms I can see from my kitchen window. They're over my neighbours' fences rather than mine, and are the three largest trees across our views. The pictured one is the first to contract the disease (fungus spread by beetles). The second tree never has been that healthy, and may have the first signs of this too. If they all catch it, there'll be one heck of a big gap left. Lots more light at this time of year. Lots more wind to batter the house and garden, when it's stormy. Not good to loose them. One of the few trees that would be left in the view, is... an Ash tree. Hope they manage to find a cure for the Ash dieback fungus that's spreading down South at the moment
A few miles away, the estate at Rosehaugh has a seemingly vast number of recently dead deciduous trees in it. Probably most of those are, or were, Elms.
