Santa Cruz Church
Thonburi is on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River. This is where Bangkok started to become the royal capital of Siam. After the defeat of the Siamese army by the Burmese, King Thaksin moved here to found a new capital.
The Portuguese had already had commercial ties with Siam just before the French. Santa Cruz church is one of the oldest churches in the country and has been in service since 1769 when it was founded. There is still a Catholic community in this riverside community. They even have an old bakery shop and café that keeps making Portuguese biscuits. The sala on the left hand-side serves as a landing pier for visitors coming by boat.
In the same area there is an old Chinese temple, a huge Thai monastery and even a Muslim mosque. It is an expression of the tolerance displayed by thai people.
