New York from the Whitney
I paid my first visit to the new Whitney Museum of American Art today. It has moved from the upper east side of Manhattan, to far west and downtown (on the Hudson at Tenth Avenue level with 12th Street). The eight-story building is ultramodern, with wonderful views from everywhere, especially from the deck extending east on the top floor. This is the south view from there, a panorama merged from three horizontal images.
There are four large exhibition floors (5-8), with an inaugural show of 600 objects from the collection which will be on display roughly through September. The selection is totally eclectic, drawing from everything, so there are only limited items from the most desired artists (e.g. one Rothko, one Pollock, ca. four Hopper paintings--though I could have missed things). But still absolutely stunning and worthwhile.
