One step at a time!

A cloud on the horizon!

Lucy had an X-ray today, it required a general anaesthetic. As I write this she is still very groggy and looks at me with questioning eyes. The vet is called Tom and very knowledgeable, he spent quite a long time with us tonight to deliver his prognosis. The long and short of it is she needs an operation, her left knee cap keeps popping out of place and if left unchecked could cause severe damage especially to the cruciate ligament. On the other hand her age and size are against her. The operation involves cutting right through some good bone and attaching various stainless steel pins and wires. Her bones are only small so this makes it a very delicate operation. She would also need to be kept immobile for at least 6 weeks. Not to mention the risk of ninety minutes of general anaesthetic at her age (she's eleven this year). It's a dilemma and no mistake. Tom said it's not a decision we have to rush and we are welcome to return and discuss it further when we are ready.

Our two dogs have never once been apart their entire lives, they both had an operation on the same day some years ago. So today Suzy went with Lucy and stayed in the vets all day to keep her sister company :-)
