Legend
It’s been a particularly hard week this week, and starting tonight (AFL football for the next 3 days!!) we are hoping for better things. It couldn’t get any worse – unless the Crows lose to a very inferior team tomorrow in Essendon.
In that vein I went for a football blip for today. Barrie Robran is the first South Australian football great honoured with a statue at the new Adelaide Oval. The bronze statue on a two-tonne stone pedestal was unveiled at the Oval’s southern plaza on Fridy morning on the eve of the stadium’s re-opening in March 2014.
I had the pleasure to see Robran play many times at this oval. He was a triple Magarey Medallist (Best and Fairest over a season of football as voted by the umpires), and is the only SANFL South Australian player who has legend status in the Australian Football Hall of Fame in Melbourne.
The statues — commissioned by philanthropist Basil Sellers — will honour four South Australian football greats. Four-time Magarey Medallist Russell Ebert, goalkicking great Ken Farmer and Magarey-Brownlow Medallist Malcolm Blight will be the other three football legends captured in bronze at the Oval.
Regarding this week's loss, see Paladian's wonderful blip today.
