The glory of their times
I was in Gillingham today for a bit of work and when we'd finished I decided to visit the Great Lines Heritage Park. This is part of the Medway Towns naval heritage and it dominates the area.
Distinctive on the skyline of the Medway Towns is the Chatham Naval Memorial. Chatham was one of three manning ports for the Royal Navy; Portsmough and Plymouth were the other two, and each has a memorial for the men and women who have no other grave; they were "buried or lost at sea or were otherwise denied, by the fortunes of war, a known and honoured grave". the original Chatham Memorial is an obelisk with a series of panels which list more than 8,500 of the fallen from the Great War. After the Second World War a surrounding wall was erected and the names of a further 10,000 and some are listed on panels on that wall. This image shows the crest above the gates at the entrance to the memorial. Behind are two of Henry Poole's lions at the base of the original obelisk.
It seemed appropriate to blip this at the end of the week which saw the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War.
I have pizza in the oven and beer in the fridge so I declare that this Saturday evening is open! Enjoy :-)
