INTERESTING INSECT
Each compound eye of the dragonfly contains between 10,000 and 30,000 individual hexagonal-shaped lenses. I'm thrilled when I get a shot that captures the pattern of these lenses! Today's subject seemed content to stay close so I could try many different combinations of settings.
An interesting tidbit: Sometimes dragonflies will stand completely vertical (straight up & down, more so than this shot). After a bit of research I learned that position is to cool down as it keeps the sun from directly hitting its abdomen. It was 90-plus degrees (F) today - strong sunshine and extremely humid, so it makes sense that this dragonfly assumed that position now and then.
