Crossing Over

I spent much of the day at Adel watching the lads play cricket, Roam being drafted into the first team again. He bowled six tidy overs without getting a wicket. We restricted Adel to a score of 179, which should have been very gettable, but somehow the runs never flowed off the bat. Forrest started well but lost his way as wickets fell at the other end and the opposition built scoreboard pressure. He was eventually bowled for 24 just before drinks. He was utterly dejected to have fought so hard to get in and then not go on to fully anchor the innings. I got a rare chance to see Roam bat, coming in at last man with the game pretty much lost, but he looked comfortable enough in getting to 7 before being cleaned up by a good one.

Although it was quite a bright day, and it felt very warm when the sun was out, it got really chilly when it clouded over. I'm not sure I can remember feeling such a marked differential before. The layers were going on and coming off all afternoon, until it got towards the latter part of the game, when they very much stayed on - including the ride home.

With the odd leaf being blown across the ground there was already a hint of the coming of autumn. Summer has been here a long time but there is still this sense that it hasn't actually started yet. I doubt it will now.

NB Posting this on Tuesday evening, struggling to keep up with blip. Friday's optimism at work was not well founded. Sadly. Wrote this up on Sunday but needed to check with Forrest that he'd be okay with this picture. He was. I think he's actually better at handling the knocks of life than I am!
