Bumps in the Road

We need to talk about...

Every parent has 'We need to talk about Kevin' moments about their own children, right?
The wee man turned decidedly glum halfway through a playground visit today.
On the swing, after holding up his hand like he was doing a Nazi salute (his mum jokingly batted it away saying 'ummm, don't do that, you look like you trying to overtake the world'), he tells her he wants to 'kick everyone'.
'What?!! No, we don't kick people,' she replies, we KISS people. We hug and cuddle everyone.'
'No, we don't cuddle everyone Mama!!' he says, getting annoyed. 'We kick everyone!'
'What?! No!! Why do you want to kick everyone?'
'Because everyone is sad,' he solemnly replies.
At this point, the dad pushing his daughter on the next swing can't help but have a good little chuckle while Mama attempts to hold in her own laughter so she can reason with the wee man.
'Everyone's not sad'
'Yes, they are.'
'Look at your sister watching you on the swing -she's laughing! She can't be sad if she's laughing. Are you maybe just saying everyone's sad because you feel sad today? Are you sad, Ernie?'
To which the wee man thinks for a second and says 'yeah'.
And then the Dad standing nearby very kindly says, 'Aye, we all have days like that, don't you worry.'
After that, and the mention of a cheese crackers snack back home, the wee man cheered up considerably.  But I think the wee man is missing his Grandma considerably (she returned home today). Lucky we're visiting her again this weekend, eh!
