Star light, star bright

You learn something every day.  This is a Star.

It's either Hypoxis vaginata (Yellow Star), or Hypoxis glabella (Little Star).  Both flowers are ankle high, both are yellow with six petals, both have bright green leaves.  The only difference is that Hypoxis vaginata has one leaf bract on the stem, and Hypoxis glabella has two leaf bracts on the stem.  Clearly I'm going to have to start crawling around on boggy ground to check out the leaf bracts so I can make a proper ID.

No, I don't think so.

However, it does explain why, in so many images or publications, you'll find a description thus  Hypoxis spp. (for example).  It's just too bloody hard to make a proper ID without having an encyclopedic knowledge of Australian Flora, or without carrying around with you the 4-volume set of Flora of South Australia.
