Mere Sands Wood
One of the great things about my job is it's diversity. One day I can be looking at a project in a village hall the next assessing a potential scheme on a nature reserve. This is the fantastic Mere Sands Wood and just happens to be one of my favourite local wild spots. It is an oasis in the middle of the featureless flat desertlike farmland of West Lancashire. It is a former sand and gravel quarry, the sand was of such high quality it was used to make glass. It has Kingfishers, Teal, Grebes, Waders, bats, dragonflies, butterflies, orchids and oak and birch woodland. The Wildlife Trust for Lancs who own the site want to do some essential woodland management. Me thinks a grant might be heading their way.
