Forests and Mires - Riisitunturi

The view from the rounded peak of Riisitunturi of miles of 'taiga' forests and mires (bogs - which are the areas than look like grass). The trees grow densely everywhere except on the tops over 400m where the snow breaks them down in the winter and in the bogs where they drown. The tops also have patches of bare basement rock showing through - great rounded masses of schist scored with the passage of the glaciers that covered this area until quite recently ... geologically speaking.

These hills form a small area of National Park with maintained trails and shelters at various points around the park.
