Idiot!

I spent 4 hours trying to work out why this bloody flash wouldn't work on the camera.
Read the manual, pulled out some reference stuff and read that, looked on line for troubleshooting ideas. I even put a different flash on there which worked fine.
I was about ready to send it in for service when I loosened the screw ring that secures it off a bit and lo and behold, the soddin' thing worked like a charm.

Alternate title: How to waste a day.
