Wooden House by Canal

I have been intending to photograph wooden houses in Augustow for some time. This one is in 'Baraki', situated between the two canals. As I long suspected, these traditional homes are becoming rare in their original state. The character of the area has changed a lot over the last 10 years.

'Baraki' was largely a ghetto during the period of German occupation and sadly very few of its inhabitants survived. There isn't much remaining evidence with the notable exception of the small Jewish graveyard which is fenced, cared for and clearly marked.
