Foxgloves

There were hundreds of Foxgloves out where I walked today. Of all the images I liked this little one struggling on a mossy bank above a foxes den.

Digitalis purpurea, Is another of our poisonous plants. All parts are toxic and indeed it has been known for thick pollen, blown onto nearby vegetable patches, to cause accidental poisoning.

The foxglove is a widely used in both herbal and allopathic medicine for treatment of heart complaints. The medicinal dosage is very close to the fatal one so, never try self medication !

The plant contains Digoxin which is administered as a long-term medication to ensure slow, powerful and regular heart beats.
Again don't try this at home! The leaves are also diuretic, and tonics are used for kidney disorders.

A homeopathic remedy is also made from the leaves, also used in the treatment of cardiac disorders

You could however try to use the Foxglove as a dye plant. It produces a beautiful apple green colour. Root vegetables keep better when Foxgloves are in the vicinity and an infusion from the plant prolongs the life of cut flowers.

Enough quackery. It's a beautiful plant. Handle with care and enjoy it's beauty both in the wild or in your garden.
