In Search of Old Torquay - A Plaque is Unveiled
I was there today when this plaque was unveiled. Herbert Minton was born in Stoke-on-Trent where Minton's was established by his father. When his father died he was in sole charge of the factory and as the company grew so did its reputation.
Herbert Minton lived in Stoke until ill health brought him to the milder climate of Torquay where in 1856 he purchased Belmont (built 1835) in Higher Woodfield Road, Torquay. He died here on 1 April 1858. The family sold Belmont in 1891. It is still a private residence, and has been beautifully restored and renamed Mintons.
