Pointless gadget

I am a geek and love technology but I struggled with the point of one of the free samples received today at the office.

In the photo are two pens incorporating LEDs. The one laid on the paper has the led at the opposite end to the nib so is usable as a torch or a pen. The one in my hand has the led around the nib and unless you want to write in the dark seems pointless.

Or am I just too stupid to see the application?
