St Catherine's Fort, Tenby
St Catherines Fort stands on St Catherine's Island and is a Grade11 listed building. You see it here at high tide but it is accessible from Castle Beach at low tide.
It was bought in 1866 from the Corporation of Tenby for £800. Work was completed in 1870 but the guns and shields not installed until 1886.
In 1907 it was decommissioned and sold to the Windsor Richards Family who converted it into a private house. During WW11 it was compulsory purchased and the house contents sold by Harrods and an anti-aircraft battery was built in front of the fort.
After the war it was again decommissioned and sold into private hands. In 1968 it opened as a zoo but this relocated in 1997 leaving it empty.
Work is now underway to restore the fort and open it to the public. In May 2015 it was announced that Pembrokeshire Coast National Park had approved an application to reopen it to the public due to the economic benefit to the area though there have been local objections. Watch this space !
After all that, we had a nice day out in Tenby today.
