Rodent

Apparently, this is a baby rat. 

The water level of the village pond is extremely low, so that there is a considerable area of 'beach' below the paved edging.  I had gone there to get some duck shots, but my eye was drawn by a strange movement in the water - which turned out to be one of these little critters swimming to the small island in the centre of the pond.

A fair amount of patience later and I was able to get this shot.
