Life in a Northern Town

i-eye Day 95: - Last Day of the Summer

Sarah is back to college tomorrow so we took a stroll down to the boating lake in Greenhead Park, and were somewhat alarmed at the new addition to the wildlife there.....

Ok so maybe that's not exactly true. Sarah chose the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which we absolutely love, and which gets better every time we visit. Enormous enclosures for the animals and a real emphasis on conservation, one of the few zoos we visit where it really seems the animals truly come first.

This is Viktor, and if you look carefully you can see his grandson Pixel swimming in the distance. Viktor is retired from the European wide breeding programme (having given many years of faithful service!), and Pixel is waiting for his moment to shine. The plan is to have 8 male bears in the four huge paddocks they have built, all as part of the conservation and breeding programme.

Probably the only species of animal that will actively hunt humans, it's worth giving a polar bear a wide berth if you come across one! The person giving the talk about polar bears kept mentioning attacks in Iceland, just as we have booked a trip there - Sarah was not happy. I kept trying to reassure her he had got his facts wrong but of course why would she believe Mum - what on earth does she know? Thank goodness for 4G and Wikipedia is all I can say.

So, the long summer chez Coombes is drawing to an end. Kind of sad but new adventures await.

Ps I added a zoomed in shot to extras - the little iPhone camera does a good job.
