Right, I think I've finally identified the garden wasps as hornets.  All these years we've thought they might be wood wasps but the pictures I've just looked up make it pretty clear that hornets they are.  This year they have nested in the hole in the apple tree used by the nuthatches earlier in the season.  We see them mostly in the evening when the house lights are on and they try to come it.  I will try to get some photos of them entering and leaving the nest as they do the most amazing dances on the threshold.  Do you get danger money for standing in front of the nest with a camera?
