Gate Detail

Walking under Marble Arch this morning I was struck by the detail in the gates which it's easy to overlook when confronted with such an iconic landmark.

Made from white Carrara marble in the nineteenth century, designed by John Nash to be at the entrance of Buckingham Palace,  relocated  twice it now sits on a traffic island at the end of Oxford Street. The gates, designed by Samuel Parker were the largest in Europe were damaged in the move and have been re-bronzed and repaired. 

The statue of George IV was never put on top and is now in Trafalgar Square.

My camera has now been sent in for a service so hope it won't be too long before it arrives home.
