A Lamp. Lit...

..It's amazing how quickly the nights draw in once September arrives.
What starts as, 'I must go and blip in a minute', soon becomes 'oo-er, the light's gone'.

This lamp always reminds me of the Big Ben Silent Minute (stay with me!) which in turn 'sparked' the Lamplighter Movement. The silent minute was an idea of Major Wellesley Tudor-Pole. During the dark days of 1940 he felt that if enough people joined in this gesture of dedicated intent (during the striking of Big Ben every evening at 9pm) it would greatly help the war effort. He later (when the BBC abandoned the striking of Big Ben at 9pm) replaced sound (or lack of it) with light, amber light, to be exact. Being an elderly chap he asked his old friend Sir George Trevelyan to be custodian of the movement, and he agreed.
Two great visionaries.

Funny how one thing leads you to think of another...
