Down to Provence
Today we set ourselves quite an journey; we tried to travel towards Clarmont Ferrand but got got caught up in a deviation' which resulted in quite a lot of shouting. Eventually we found our way and whizzed down the auto route then crossing over onto a D road and winding through the Cevennes on towards the massive central. We stopped for a picnic lunch and the only sound we could hear was eagles calling to one another - bliss.
Arrived to stay in Nimes, an astonishing old town with equally astonishing Roman ruins, an amphitheatre dating back to AD 70 (although it has had work done to it in 18 century) which is now used as a bull ring with capacity for 22,000 people. The fights are usually bloodless - a ribbon is tied on the horn of the bull and the matador who has the most ribbons at the end of the season is the winner! There are still a few fights each year ' to the death' though astonishingly.
The photo today is of that bull arena in the middle of town.
There is also a Roman temple, Maison Carree, believed to be the most well preserved temple in what was once the Roman Empire.
