The Geeky Christian

For our last but not least day of Suffolk we decided to head to Ickworth first, which has this impressive Roman replica rotunda, pictured here. The interior was suitably impressive, lots of artwork collected by an eccentric 1700s gent who was quite the scandalous figure during his time, a Bishop and an atheist and a hedonist all rolled into one! I'll say this for him, he had good taste in art and interiors! Lots of gold gilding and a chandelier in almost every room, kind of crazy. There was the usual servants quarters and things to explore too. And we had a very nice lunch here! Gasp! A National Trust restaurant with good lunches! Maybe they're improving.

After this we headed on to Lavenham (of course) in the afternoon. We went here a few years back but we didn't do the Little Hall or Guildhall so we did those. And we had a cream tea! Or rather Mum & Dad did, can't have clotted cream with my acne alas! But I had a nice cake again, so I was content. Both Little Hall and the place where we had our tea (or in my case, apple juice!) were very interesting old places to see inside. And we had a nice lady giving us a personal history lesson at Little Hall, learnt all about the wool trade etc and why Long Melford flourished and Lavenham did not (basically Melford modernised and Lavenham didn't!). We have the collapse of the wool trade to thank for the remarkable preservation in Lavenham - they couldn't afford to reface buildings or knock them down.

Well that's it, it felt appropriate to finish with Lavenham! Headed back home tomorrow. It was a very good last day, and as you can see we had idyllic weather, and it lasted all day! That's three days out of six, not bad eh. Best week of weather in ages.
