Queens College Oxford

This was our first stop this morning. Queens was my father's college during his doctoral studies as a Rhodes Scholar in the late 1920s.  (He recalled jokingly that when he first saw the list of Oxford colleges, he thought he certainly didn't want New College--in fact it's one of the oldest, founded in 1379).  Queens's neoclassical architecture is impressive in its uniformity. There are three quadrangles, two large and austere and the third smaller bordered by rich plantings. The chapel is superb. Afterwards we made a quick stop at the Weston Library (formerly the New Bodleian), which had an excellent exhibition of choice items from the Bodelian lIbraries' collection.

In early afternoon we bid farewell to our hosts at Somerville College, and journeyed by train to stay with my cousins Albert and Popsy at their marvelous cottage near Stroud in the Cotswolds.  i'm backblipping this the next afternoon.
