No sex please, we're British
This morning we visited an Amish village and spent a couple of hours learning about their way of life. The blip is from the village.
I always thought they were Dutch, as they are referred to as the 'Pennsylvania Dutch' but apparently this is only because the Americans couldn't pronounce Deutsch; they're actually of German descent.
We learned that they prefer their way of simple living and that family life is generally much better. They feel safer in 'their' world.
We saw a couple of buggy's out and about, they go at quite a speed!
We chuckled at the fact they don't use electricity or mod cons but we picked up wifi there!
I liked the gift shop, especially the t shirt that said 'I love Intercourse'. Which was the town we visited for lunch in Pennsylvania, before anyone thinks I'm a nympho! The title of the blip is in reference to this!
We stayed at a place called 'kitchen kettle village' which is a little shopping village with different stores selling locally made products. There were quite a few Amish working here.
I bought a teddy bear and a ballerina doll (which looks like the old cabbage patch dolls) which are made by 2 Amish sisters (their names are on the label). They offered personalised overalls for the Bears and bibs for the ballerina, so I ordered these for Theo and Theia; they should be posted out to me in a week or so.
That's another Christmas present sorted!
The weather took a turn for the worse today; although it's warm (21c) it's been really wet.
We are staying at the Omni Shoreham hotel which is steeped in history and lots of famous people have stayed there (Presidents, dignitaries, Sinatra).
Tonight we caught the metro into the downtown area and visited a shopping mall. Mr A recognised it when we arrived as the place he'd bought me some gifts when he was here last year!
It was still early, so rather than go back to the hotel, we decided to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue to see the White House at night.
We also saw the FBI building, the Navy memorial, Washington monument, WW2 monument, Lincoln memorial and Capitol Hill.
Tomorrow we have an official city tour in the morning, then the rest of the day is ours to explore by ourselves.
