Pollen.
..It's raining in the poly tunnel. Raining pollen, from the sweetcorn plants. The leaves are covered with pollen grains, and anthers that have fallen from the flower spikes. Maize is unusual among grasses (it is a grass) in that the male and female flower parts are separate. The female flowers are the cobs, with the tassles of hair like strands waiting for wind blown pollen to fertilise. I've got four beds, either side of the doors, and at each end of the tunnel. One bed has grown much higher than the rest, almost pushing through the plastic cover. The other 3 beds are a for two short of touching the plastic. They are mini cobs, and I'm meant to harvest before they mature. It's quite difficult to decide when. I may grow a proper variety next year..
Can anyone recommend a variety?
Had some strong winds overnight, which blew the fleeces off the veges at the bottom of the croft. One piece was captured on it's bid for freedom by the gate!.
And the Archers.. And cooked breakfast..
Tanni waited patiently for me on the grass verge (extra pic)..
(sorry if the picture is a bit grainy)
