the Battery, Lundy

imagine living here! two families did, in the mid 18oo's. their job was to fire 'blanks' from canons every ten minutes when conditions were foggy, to warn seafarers. they were supposed to have no more than two children per family there, as space was limited, but at one point had 11 between them! the children had to run and hide whenever they had inspections.
this is on the western side of the island, nothing but the Atlantic between this point and America.

Lundy is filled with history, ruins, restored buildings and plenty of stories. A fascinating place.
