The Lundy Eye

Proud statue

This is one of my favourite Glasgow statues. It depicts Dolores Ibarruri (La Pasionaria), a left-wing Spanish politician, and commemorates those who fought and died in the Spanish Civil War.
Of the 2,100 volunteers from Britain who went to fight Franco, 534 were killed, 65 of them from Glasgow. It says a lot about the city's radical political history.
The statue is at Clyde Place, in front of the Custom House and overlooks the River Clyde. Very proud we are of her too.
The inscription says: Better to Die on Your Feet Than Live For Ever on Your Knees.
