Panormitis
There is a memorial stone high up in the hills of Symi.
This bronze in Panormitis shows the execution of the Bishop, a priest and a worker at the monastery by the Germans during world war two. They were caught communicating with the British using a wireless. They were taken up to a spot near the memorial and shot.
I explained this to my fellow walkers while passing the memorial and there was a stony silence. Often there is a discussion about the brutality of war, the senseless waste of life, the unkindness of humans to one another.
But this wasn't just any group of walkers.
