Victoria Cross awarded Wytschaete 280918

My Great Uncle Louis Mcguffie born 15/03/1893 (Wigtown).

Acting Sergeant Mcguffie entered Picadily Farm Wytschaete Ypres Salient on 280918 and single handed detained One German Officer and 25 Other Ranks. The next day he saved captured British prisoners from the Germans using only is issue rifle and some Mills bombs.
One week later he took a bomb fragment to the head and died a few days later and is buried in Zantvoorde cemetary a few miles from where he died.

His other 3 brothers also served in the same war, one lost his left arm, another was mentally disabled home and never recovered, and the 3rd my Grandad came home un-scaythed although continued to have nightmares and was found drowned (thought to be suicide) when my mum was 8 year's old.

My father served in World War 11 as an RAF tail gunner, serving in Bombers and was not brought back from Burma till 1946, when his body weight was down to 6 stone and he was covered in rashes, he also continued to have nightmares, and when he finally arrived home he put is all his medals and ribbons in the dustbin.
