Roman Baths in Bath

This morning we visited the complex of baths built by the Romans in the mid-first century AD, when they discovered the hot springs bubbling up from the ground.  The water emerges at a temperature of 46˚C (114˚F), after starting as rainfall on hills several miles away some 10,000 years earlier.  The baths fell into disuse in the fifth century and disappeared under the detritus of the following millenium and more. The main pool you see here was rediscovered in the early 19th century--everything above the bases of the columns has been added since then.  The late 19th century statues depict Roman emperors and governors of Roman Britain.  In the background is 16th century   Bath Abbey , which I blipped yesterday.   Backblipped next day.
