Outpatient
After a fair bit of deliberation (and following consultation with my pet insurer) I took Basil for an ophthalmological assessment today to see if cataract surgery would be worthwhile for him. Basil is now 13 and both his eyesight and hearing have been declining, which has resulted in him bumping into things (and people), being less inclined to go out into the garden, and being a bit bewildered when out for walks; I've lost him a number of times this year when he's unexpectedly taken a wrong turn after I've not looked behind me for a little while.
So we went down to Havant this afternoon while Polly - for the first time ever - went to Auntie Dee's on her own. She got a glowing report. Basil meanwhile was thoroughly examined by a very nice vet called Natalia who confirmed that he has an advanced cataract in one eye and a developing one in the other. It seems he would be a good candidate for cataract surgery so I'm going to give it some serious thought and, if we go ahead, it will be in the next few weeks. It feels like a big decision :/
Pictured is Basil after the appointment in a reflective mood prior to dozing off on the journey home following all the excitement of our excursion (and all the treats Natalia gave him).
