First of a couple of days in the north east, first to Bishop Auckland and the old residence of the Bishops of Durham, Auckland Castle. It is an interesting place and it was fascinating to hear about plans for the future including the regeneration of the town. I was most looking forward to seeing this video piece by Bill Viola in the chapel, Earth Martyr, Air Martyr, Fire Martyr, and Water Martyr. His work is so powerful and emotional it takes your breathe away.
Then on to the Bowes Museum, an impressive Victorian building that looks like a French chateau, especially in the brilliant sunshine we had today.  They are hosting an exhibition of Yves Saint Laurent, lots of flashy gowns not really to my taste but it was heaving with people who plainly disagreed.
