Centaury

Common centaury - Centaurium erythraea (related to the gentians)

An elusive plant around here. It prefers open ground with reduced competition so grows in gravelly waste ground.  It also seems to like calcareous soil so is found where there is limestone. It disappears from a site once other species get a hold and start to dominate. This was growing on the approach to a disused quarry.
