The "Hundred Steps" of Corinaldo, Le Marche, Italy
We have arrived at our base for the next week.
Corinaldo is a hilltop town in the province of Le Marche. Its defensive walls and buildings, part medieval and part renaissance period, are almost completely intact. The circumference of the walls is one kilometer.
The town's position and the surrounding views are stunning, as this photo suggests. Corinaldo "officially" ranks as the fifth most beautiful town of the province.
This view is taken from the hilltop looking south-eastwards, from the top of the "Hundred Steps". It in fact comprises 95 steps, then there is the town well (of which later), followed by a further descent of a little over a hundred steps - you tend to stop counting after reaching a hundred - to the lower town gate. The good news is that each step is only a few inches deep.
Corinaldo is the birthplace of Saint Maria Goretti (of whom later).
