The West Highland Line
So recent birthdays and a change in Scotrail operator resulted in us being able to join a certain railcard scheme for oldies (eek). Not only was it free to join (until end of Oct), we got to book a return trip to anywhere in Scotland for £10! (conditions apply: use by end of September!)
So from our new home station we set off to Edinburgh, Glasgow, then up the West Highland Line, past Trident (haha) then via Fort William and stopping at Morar, the 2nd last stop. We've longed to do this route for, er, a long time, then Harry Potter came along and made it more popular, with steam train journeys and films, so this journey was pretty much our first choice.
We hadn't planned it but our stop in Glasgow had a few flag wavers... no idea why but can't resist an extra. I really wanted the photo going over Glenfinnan Viaduct to be my main blip, as it was the main reason for doing this, but I couldn't not choose the one I did - but it gets an extra.
We arrived about 5.30pm, checked in, then off for a wander by the Morar Sands, which may be my favourite mainland sands! We timed it perfectly for the sunset, as the sun dropped down through a gap in the clouds for 15 minutes. It was stunning as the sun creeped towards us and Ms H could not resist posing wherever she got the chance...
This line, from Glasgow to Mallaig, is seen by some as the most scenic in the UK and I'd agree with that. We've travelled most of this route by car, many times, so it was great to see it from a different angle. And we have do it again tomorrow back home :-)
